A Spice More Valuable Than Gold!

From the crocus we derive the spice known as "Saffron". Saffron comes from the stigma and styles, the thread-like parts of the flower that stick out of the middle of the flower.

Saffron is a spice that has historically been used as a coloring and flavoring agent. The spice is mostly grown in the Middle East, but it can also be found in other parts of Asia and Europe.

Crocus plants are harvested by hand which makes them expensive to cultivate. This explains why it was once reserved for nobility and the rich.

Harvesting saffron requires a lot of manual labor from the farmers who have to cut off the stamens from each flower, then they have to dry them properly before they can be sold or used in cooking.

For these reasons Saffron is the most expensive spice sold and is commonly sold in tiny quantities.

In ancient times saffron was used to make medicines and used as a yellow dye. Now that is some expensive fabric! This delicious & fragrant spice is used to flavor drinks & popular culinary dishes such as paella and risotto meals.
